There are many virtual worlds contending to lead the industry today, most take on a decidedly social slant as opposed to that of a technology platform. These various competing worlds include There™ by Makena Technologies™ as well as Kaneva™,  Active Worlds™, Croquet and the Chinese and Korean outfits HiPiHi™ and Nurien respectively. But by far the most successful of these online realities is Second Life™, created by Linden Lab™ in 2003 with well over 13 million registered accounts and nearly a million logging in each month.

Virtual worlds allow rapid prototyping, collaboration, teleconferencing and training at rates economical to both businesses and consumers. Second Life specifically, offers cross-world communication APIs along with Open Source clients which have given rise to backwards compatible sister worlds (OpenSimulator), positioning it for widespread development and adoption.

Besides all that, virtual worlds like Second Life and others can also be a great form of relaxation and a chance for people to socialize like they would in real life across great distances. Many people have virtual homes and hobbies within these worlds as well as businesses, the immersive nature and relatively low barrier to entry has allowed many to take a sort of instant vacation after a long days work.
