The online virtual world of Second Life™, created by Linden Lab™, is to date the most successful “Metaverse” since first envisioned by author Neal Stephenson in his groundbreaking science fiction novel “Snow Crash”. Since its’ inception in 2003, Second Life™ has attracted over 13 million registered accounts with an average of about 900,000 of said accounts logging in each month in bunches of 30 to 60 thousand at a time. Virtual worlds like Second Life™ allow individuals and organizations to communicate across the Internet with a personal touch that could previously only be achieved with a face to face meeting, allowing collaboration and trust to flow more easily. But Second Life™ is not perfect, and it has its’ share of positives and negatives like its’ competing platforms; There™, Active Worlds™, Kaneva™ and the Chinese project of HiPiHi™ (Some in their infancy, some long past their prime).

We here at ZATZAi Services have been a part of the communities of several of these virtual worlds for years and our aim is to connect people and organizations in meaningful ways. Success in this, the latest expansion of the Internet does not come easily, many of the methods previously successful online and in the real world simply do not work in virtual worlds. Over time we have learned from our own work experimentation, as well as the success and failures of our colleagues, what works and what doesn’t. We continue to expand our knowledge, trying new methods in search of greater success and permanence. Fly by night operations simple do not work, virtual worlds are not for the simple placing of “elaborate billboards”, if you want results it’s important to involve yourself with the community and the press much as an organization would reach out to a community in the real world.
