[12:06]  ZATZAi Asturias: So thanks for coming out to the meeting today. Today we’re going to be discussing the future of the Artificial Isle and the United Sailing Sims continent of which we are a part.<br />

[12:06]  ZATZAi Asturias: . I’ll be bringing you up to speed on the ongoing matters and then opening the floor to questions, so please hold comments for the time being.<br />
[12:06]  ZATZAi Asturias: A transcript of this discussion will also be made available on the blog (http://blog.zatzai.com) for any who cannot attend.<br />
[12:06]  ZATZAi Asturias: Before I begin though, I’d like to make a quick comment. While the announcement of this town hall was made across the various Ai groups (And no doubt some of you got duplicates due to that), that will not always be the case in the future.<br />
[12:07]  ZATZAi Asturias: In order to keep up to date on matters in Ai, please either subscribe to the blog at (http://blog.zatzai.com) or join the Artificial Isle group, which is free to join.<br />
[12:07]  ZATZAi Asturias: . Only matters of extreme importance, will be shared across all groups, otherwise they will be limited only to matters that affect that particular subgroup.<br />
[12:07]  ZATZAi Asturias: Now, in regards to recent events… As many of you are no doubt aware, several weeks ago Linden Lab announced a price change to OpenSpace sims, this is something that greatly affects Ai and the larger USS as we use OpenSpace sims for our waterways.<br />
[12:07]  ZATZAi Asturias: What makes this price increase particularly difficult is that many of our empty waterway sims have to be subsidized by income from the surrounding properties.<br />
[12:07]  ZATZAi Asturias: So dealing with this is proving to be difficult for management but not insurmountable, there are a few options open to us though some negotiations are ongoing.<br />
[12:08]  ZATZAi Asturias: Before I get into that though, I want to explain exactly what Linden Lab is doing from a factual standpoint.<br />
[12:08]  ZATZAi Asturias: This information is from a collection of blog posts, office hour meetings, and comments on the forum made by M Linden, Jack Linden, and Babbage Linden…<br />
[12:09]  ZATZAi Asturias: Linden Lab has contended that the use over OpenSpace sims is such that the fees do not make up for the costs.<br />
[12:09]  ZATZAi Asturias: As such they have decided to break OpenSpace sims into two products, what we now know as an OpenSpace sim will be cease to exist.<br />
[12:09]  ZATZAi Asturias: In its place will be the Homestead sims, these sims cost $125 a month as opposed to $75/m, and offer the same prim count of 3,750 prims per server but are limited to 20 avatar concurrency.<br />
[12:09]  ZATZAi Asturias: . The new OpenSpace sims will cost $75/m and offer 750 prims, have a concurrency limit of 10 avatars and any form of residential or commercial use will be strictly disallowed by the Lab.<br />
[12:09]  ZATZAi Asturias: . Additionally Homestead sims are said to be limited to three per core rather than four per core so there may be increased performance there.<br />
[12:10]  ZATZAi Asturias: Furthermore, LL has stated that Homestead and OpenSpace sims will have script limitations.<br />
[12:10]  ZATZAi Asturias: Best guess as to what these will be from comments by Babbage Linden are for a limit of 25 scripts for every 512m2 in a homestead, so a full homestead sim would be limited to 3,200 scripts (However since Havok 4 shares script memory, the number would probably be closer to 2,000 scripts).<br />
[12:10]  ZATZAi Asturias: This is a fairly high number though and I expect it to be lowered by LL, but I do not expect script limitations to be a major concern for the future at this point (Currently our OpenSpace sims have at most 600 scripts in them).<br />
[12:10]  ZATZAi Asturias: But it will mean that management will have to be even more watchful of simulator resource usage so that we stay well clear of the limitations.<br />
[12:11]  ZATZAi Asturias: With these changes, some of the waterways in the USS will become the new OpenSpaces, those that do not have high traffic numbers, and others Homesteads (For the higher concurrency limit).<br />
[12:11]  ZATZAi Asturias: Large events that require the presence of several dozen avatars will have to be restricted to full sims.<br />
[12:11]  ZATZAi Asturias: In order to overcome the concurrency issue, management will be extending a free service to all residential members of the Ai estate; that being the free use of the Oceanside Bar &amp; Lounge for personal gatherings that require a high concurrency level.<br />
[12:11]  ZATZAi Asturias: In order to take advantage of this, one simply has to ask management for a reservation (Preferably a week in advance), provided there are no conflicts the facility will be made available.<br />
[12:12]  ZATZAi Asturias: Now the question of costs comes up, and I’m sure this is what you’ve all been waiting to hear. After much deliberation I have decided to grandfather all current tenants under the old pricing structure until at least July 2009 when I will have to re-evaluate the situation.<br />
[12:12]  ZATZAi Asturias: However, costs for new leases will go up in January as is required to account for the new fees and to bring us in line with market standards.<br />
[12:12]  ZATZAi Asturias: Due to the grandfathering of all pre-existing leases, re-negotiations of these leases will not be possible without changing them to the new lease rates, so they are essentially locked.<br />
[12:12]  ZATZAi Asturias: As far as what the new lease rates will be, expect a 50% increase for shops, 150% increase for berths (Slips) and a 75% increase for what will now be Homestead property.<br />
[12:13]  ZATZAi Asturias: But again, this will be on new and re-negotiated leases only, and no your lease will not be re-negotiated without your consent. The grandfathering will be honored until at least the 1st of July 2009.<br />
[12:13]  ZATZAi Asturias: One can also expect the landscape to change, the convention stalls in Ai will be torn down and new stores will be erected in their place, but not too many mind you<br />
[12:13]  ZATZAi Asturias: The reduction of prims to accommodate new tenants is already underway but it will not affect your prim counts, it just means the shuffling and refining of builds (This will be an ongoing process).<br />
[12:13]  ZATZAi Asturias: The ZATZAi sim is being changed into a full airport, and the Passages sim will be leaving, to be replaced by 5 Homestead sims that will form a large island to the south to be rented out (Primarily residential).<br />
[12:14]  ZATZAi Asturias: The Cielo community sandbox will be relocated to Lost Isle which will become a Homestead sim rather than OpenSpace.<br />
[12:14]  ZATZAi Asturias: More of an emphasis is going to be placed on activities than before; an effort is being made to bring in several clubs, ironclads, flying and etc to spur traffic in the area<br />
[12:14]  ZATZAi Asturias: These groups will have their own area in which they reside so they are out of the way, but will make use of the open air and water of the entire estate, and hopefully bring some more excitement to the area.<br />
[12:15]  ZATZAi Asturias: Now on the matter of the greater United Sailing Sims, of which the Artificial Isle estate is a part, negotiations are ongoing.<br />
[12:15]  ZATZAi Asturias: There are eight owners and over 130 sims that make up the USS and we’ve been in daily meetings to arrange the map to reduce costs but maintain the feel as best as possible.<br />
[12:15]  ZATZAi Asturias: There is still some turmoil to the matter and there are two leading proposals, one that would mean a smaller but similar USS to what we have today and another that would mean a much larger USS.<br />
[12:15]  ZATZAi Asturias: Point of fact, there will be another meeting I have to attend after this town hall to help decide the direction and agenda for a meeting we are all having with Linden Lab tomorrow.<br />
[12:15]  ZATZAi Asturias: Yes, even in these crazy times when we are all gut wrenching mad at the Lab, and have been stressed over these changes for a month now, we are still in negotiations with them for as good an outcome as possible.<br />
[12:16]  ZATZAi Asturias: We have been trying hard to fight this price increase not only for our own communities but for the large Second Life populace…<br />
[12:16]  ZATZAi Asturias: But the cold reality is that we must think of our immediate community, or tenants, you fine people first, and what is best for all of us.<br />
[12:16]  ZATZAi Asturias: At this point I cannot tell you exactly what will happen with the greater USS as the situation changes every day.<br />
[12:16]  ZATZAi Asturias: But I am confident that no matter what, we will work out something that preserves or enhances our immediate community.<br />
[12:17]  ZATZAi Asturias: It may mean that the larger populace comes to loath the choice we make, but our first priority is to you, and I ask that you trust us through this crisis as you have before and we’ll come out better for it.<br />
[12:17]  ZATZAi Asturias: Besides all that though, I can tell you that we, as a group, are making investments in the future.<br />
[12:17]  ZATZAi Asturias: We are talking with and working on advancing initiatives like OpenSim, in order to put competitive pressure on Linden Lab and also to give us a working alternative to Second Life.<br />
[12:17]  ZATZAi Asturias: However it is not ready yet, our hope is that in a year’s time it will be good enough to have a strong dual presence in both worlds, as we don’t necessarily want to abandon Second Life.<br />
[12:18]  ZATZAi Asturias: And we are working with other estates within Second Life as well, and while the $95 increase is now unavoidable, it is our hope that we can persuade the Lab to drop the further increase to $125 in July of 2009.<br />
[12:18]  ZATZAi Asturias: Now I will open the floor up to questions, I will try to answer them as best I can before I have to prepare for my next meeting…<br />
[12:19]  Driff Beardmore: of the two proposals for USS as a whole, which do you prefer?<br />
[12:19]  ZATZAi Asturias: One of the proposals would mean the USS shrinks by atleast 6 sims immediately, and possible another 10 down the line. I do not like that proposal.<br />
[12:20]  ZATZAi Asturias: There is another option being tenured to us from our negotiations with Linden Lab, though it may not be politically correct, it would I think offer the best solution for the community<br />
[12:20]  ZATZAi Asturias: There would be little or no loss in space, and in fact an increase in it<br />
[12:20]  IsaDaft Trollop: So you and the other owners are meeting with LL directly?<br />
[12:20]  ZATZAi Asturias: With Jack Linden specifically, over the past several weeks<br />
[12:21]  Driff Beardmore: to me that sounds like the better option.<br />
[12:21]  IsaDaft Trollop: yes, I agree<br />
[12:21]  ZATZAi Asturias: I think so as well, though we&#8217;re sure to catch some flack for it. Its the best option for us, if not for all of Second Life.<br />

[12:22]  ZATZAi Asturias: Note that there will be no reduction in costs either way, but things will be made far easier one way than another<br />
[12:22]  Sen Pixie: I need to crunch some numbers&#8230;. I&#8217;m not sure if the AI price increases would be equal to, more, or less than owning a Homestead outright. I love the AI community and want to stay apart of it. Like you said though, there are cold, hard facts here.<br />

[12:23]  Sen Pixie: Thankfully, you always provide far more advance notice of changes than LL, allowing all of us to plan very well in preparation :-)<br />

[12:23]  ZATZAi Asturias: Yes, well if you want to move to a homestead you can, but I think you&#8217;ll find that its far more expensive ;-)<br />
[12:24]  ZATZAi Asturias: Long term, I have hope to offer more full sim rentals that will be more economical, outside of Ai<br />
[12:24]  Sen Pixie: That&#8217;s what I was wondering. I think you&#8217;re right there.<br />
[12:24]  IsaDaft Trollop: so we are grandfathered at current price till July?&#8230;current tenants?<br />
[12:24]  ZATZAi Asturias: But any homestead will be atleast $150 a month from anyone, in July<br />
[12:24]  ZATZAi Asturias: Yes Isa<br />
[12:24]  ZATZAi Asturias: I&#8217;m hoping we can get LL to back down on the pricing in July<br />
[12:24]  ZATZAi Asturias: But I dont know for certain on that of course<br />

[12:25]  Driff Beardmore: If OpenLife can ge up to speed, LL may be more esialy persuaded<br />
[12:25]  ZATZAi Asturias: That is our hope<br />
[12:25]  ZATZAi Asturias: We feel that the openspace change to 3,750 prims for $75 and the ease of getting them was to compete with OpenSim<br />
[12:26]  Driff Beardmore: Mark has made mention of OpenLife as well, i hope LL is listenning carefully&#8230;<br />
[12:26]  ZATZAi Asturias: And we want to make them feel the competition again<br />
[12:26]  ZATZAi Asturias: Yes, we are working with OSGrid specifically, as they have the developers that OpenLife does not<br />
[12:26]  ZATZAi Asturias: But its all OpenSim<br />
[12:26]  Sen Pixie: Agreed ZATZ. If a 3rd party gets bugs worked out sufficiently, and figures our asset transferance, LL will have to start listening.<br />

<p>One, the Fleet of Wrath Exiles, a fugitive in a long running chase. Widely scattered, converging on the Wrath Rock rendezvous point. The other, the Royal Antiquity Navy, consolidated in a battle line, with fast and powerful ships.</p>
<p>The Antiquity line approached from the North (Blue). The Wrath line (Red) was smaller, spread out to protect the mortar ship (triangle).</p>

<p>The ensuing battle, which featured the surprise entrance of LCDR Dagger midway through, was an unexpected victory for the Fleet of Wrath Exiles. Every RAN ship was sunk or run off, with no loss on the part of the Wrath fleet. Even so, Fleet Engineer Murakami states that every ship in the fleet will require a major overhaul after having most of our armor plate shot away and the hulls actually breached in places. A very near run thing, the Battle of Wrath Rock.</p>
<p>Fortunately, the Rose of Trelawney, Commodore O&#8217;Toole&#8217;s ship, had a camera mounted in the bow!</p>

I&#8217;ll be helping to explain what OpenSim is and what ie means for Second Life and Virtual Worlds everywhere as well as meeting and greeting around the show floor as I have the chance. <p>Today marks the third and final day of the May 2008 Second Convention. We start off the day at 1pm with sailboat racing on the new triangle course in the ZATZAi sim, great for those new to sailing in Second Life. Chaos Koala will be DJing during the race and then at 3pm it&#8217;s time for the Whispers fashion show with outfits from Belissima, Nuclear Boutique, Nyte &#8216;N&#8217; Day and shoes by Polish Up. During the fashion show there will be a special presentation of Radio Free Darkmere syndicated across the SecCon satellite locals. The convention closes with a live music performance by Joaquin Gustav at 7pm.</p>
